Assignments:
Come to class ready to learn!  When the bell rings, you are to be in your seat, quiet, and working on your Root of the Week and SSR.  You consider yourselves to be young adults and I respect that, but being an adult has responsibilities; come to class prepared.  Students will be required to complete a Weekly Reading Assignment that will be collected each week.  Within each quarter, students will have various quizzes and class work assignments that will be averaged into their final grade.
Cell phones and pagers
Prior to the start of class, please turn your cell phones off, to avoid unnecessary classroom disruptions.  Parents, in an effort to keep the learning environment free of distraction, we ask that you contact your student through the front office at 754-322-2300.
Course Materials:
1 two-pocket three pronged folder or 3 ring binder, loose leaf notebook paper,  2 composition books, 1pkg. index cards, paper, pens, pencils, highlighters, and reading material.
Academic Honesty
On my honor as a student at JPT, I have neither given nor received aid on any tests.

Late Work
Late assignments will not be accepted unless prearranged with teacher.
Participation
ALL STUDENTS  are EXPECTED to participate in class at all times.  This is to maximize their learning potential.
Assignments
Class Work and Homework Policy:  All class work is due on the day it is assigned unless otherwise noted.  All Weekly Reading Assignments are due at the end of each week unless otherwise noted.
Quizzes: Announced and unannounced quizzes will be given each marking quarter.

Tests: Tests will be given at the end of each concept taught.  These may be in the form of paper/pencil or online.  Any student absent for a test must make arrangements to take the test either before or after school.

Attendance:  All assignments missed during excused absences must be made up within the prescribed time limit, which is two days for each day missed.  However, this does not excuse the student from work assigned when the student was present in class.  It is the student’s obligation and responsibility to find out what work was missed.  There will be no opportunity for makeup work for unexcused absences.

Rules for Classroom Behavior
Students must know and follow all rules in the student handbook in addition to classroom rules mandated by the teacher.
1.             Be in your assigned seat and prepared to work when the bell rings.
2.             Follow directions the first time given.
3.             No arguing in class. Concerns and/ or appeals must be discussed with teacher privately before/ after class or submitted to teacher in writing after class.
4.             Raise your hand and wait to be recognized before speaking.
5.             Abstain from eating, drinking, chewing and grooming in our classroom. Water is okay.
6.             Respect the rights and property of others.

8.             At the end of the period, remain in your seat until you are dismissed. Do NOT line up at the door.

Policy for Severe Behavior
Severely disruptive behavior such as repeated disruptions, fighting, cursing, physical assault, or verbal abuse of the teacher will result in immediate referral to the assistant principal or school security officer.

Consequences for Disruptive Behavior

1st Offense: A verbal warning will be given when a minor classroom or school rule is broken, unless the discipline code calls for a referral.

2nd Offense: A 2nd verbal warning will be given and may be accompanied by a telephone call to the parent/ guardian. If a conference is necessary, it will be scheduled through Guidance.

3rd Offense: If the problem persists after a verbal warning, students will be given a detention, which will be accompanied by a telephone call to the parent/ guardian.

4th Offense: If the problem persists after a detention, a discipline referral will be given.

Specific Behavior Violations
The instructor is particularly strict with enforcing the consequence for insubordination towards the teacher. Please do not argue with the teacher during class. If you feel you were wrongly identified as misbehaving, submit your explanation in writing and/or prepare to discuss the matter calmly with the teacher after class or after school. If you do not follow this procedure, you will receive a detention and/or be sent to internal suspension. This policy is for the good of the group; please respect that.
This handout is to be shown to your parents/guardians and then kept in your binder for reference. Be aware that when a binder check or quiz occurs, the teacher will look for this sheet. Please detach and return the slip below with the signatures of both you and your parent/ guardian.
I have read and understand these rules and the consequences for these offenses.

I believe in your potential! Let’s work together for a successful year!
Please return this page to Mr. Rouso by 8/31 for your first class grade.
Keep your syllabus in your class folder/binder.
I understand and will follow to the best of my abilities the 2015-16 reading syllabus. I also understand that any infraction of the above outlined rules and classroom rules may result in disciplinary action.
