In-Class Assignment 3/28/16

Write down our new Learning Goal:

Students will be able to read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 9–10 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.

Write down Vocabulary:

Reading Literature

Literature – written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit

Merit – claim to respect and praise; excellence; worth

Drama – a play for theater, radio, or television

Poem – a piece of writing that partakes of the nature of both speech and song

Novel – a fictitious prose narrative of book length

Fiction – literature in the form of prose, especially short stories and novels, that describes imaginary 
events and people

Non- Fiction – prose writing that is based on facts, real events, and real people, such as biography or history.

Literary Fiction –a term principally used for fictional works that hold literary merit

Complexity – the state or quality of being intricate or complicated


Band – A group or range

2nd Quarter Morphemes

Morpheme: INTER
Word: Interact
Definition: to act upon one another
Sentence: The students were scolded for their interaction during S.S.R.

Morpheme: INTRA
Word: Intramural
Definition: involving only students at the same school or college
Sentence: I did not make the FSU football team, so I signed up for an intramural team instead.

Morpheme: DIA
Word: Dialog
Definition: conversation between two or more persons
Sentence: I asked them to hold their dialogue until after S.S.R.

Morpheme: AUDIT
Word: Auditorium
Definition: the space set apart for the audience in a theater, school, or other public building
Sentence: Students in 2nd and 3rd period classes were escorted to the auditorium for the Black History Performance.

Morpheme: PEND
Word: Appendix
Definition: extra materials added at the end of a book
Sentence: Joe never reads the chapters; he just uses the appendix to finish his homework.

Morpheme: CIRCUM
Word: Circumvent
Definition: to avoid being stopped by (a law or rule), to get around something in a clever, often dishonest way
Sentence: The hacker circumvented the firewall using a program he created.

Morpheme: TECH
Word: Technique
Definition: a way of doing something by using special knowledge or skill
Sentence: Today we learned some techniques for relieving stress.

Morpheme: LAT
Word: Lateral
Definition: toward, on or coming from the side
Sentence: To avoid getting tackled, he made a lateral pass to one of his teammates.

Morpheme: CO
Word: Coexist
Definition: to exist together at the same time
Sentence: The two species coexist together in the same environment

This assignment is worth 10 extra credit points. All you have to do is complete the survey online and have your parents complete the paper survey. When you return the paper copy I will give you 10 extra credit points.
